All of us now want to get to the bottom of who was told what, and when.  Pembroke Pines has entered a public records request with the Town of Southwest Ranches and a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with ICE trying to get to the bottom of what happened two days ago, 3/28/2012, when Debbie Wasserman Schultz's office announced to the public and to the City of Pembroke Pines that ICE pulled the plug on the Southwest Ranches detention facility.

ICE Announces Cancellation of Prison, then Backtracks. Dewey Defeats Truman or Amateur Hour?

Late yesterday morning, a call came in from Jodi Davidson, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz's (FL20-D) District Director, that communicated an official statement from ICE that they had withdrawn Southwest Ranches from consideration for building an immigrant prison there due to a reevaluation in the need for ICE bed space in south Florida.

Pro Prison Wasserman-Schultz Makes Her Constituents Unhappy

Congresswoman FL-20 and Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee Debbie Wasserman Schultz is criticized by a constituent at the last Pembroke Pines commission meeting. Wasserman-Schultz earned the ire of her constituents when she and Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) went on record endorsing the proposed 2200 bed immigrant prison and deportation processing center in Southwest Ranches last year.

Wasserman-Schultz has taken money from the operator of the proposed prison, Corrections Corporation of America, LLC.  Wasserman-Schultz has steadfastly refused to meet with her constituents regarding her endorsement, has resolutely affirmed her continued support for the prison, and now has gone radio silent.

BROWARD COUNTY COMMISSIONER LOIS WEXLER IS PUTTING AN ITEM ON THEIR MARCH 2OTH, 2012 AGENDA GIVING A 20-YEAR MORATORIUM ON THE BROWARD COUNTY PRISON PLAT. 

THIS AGENDA ITEM GIVES THE RESIDENTS IN THE AREA MUCH NEEDED COMFORT THAT ANOTHER PRISON ISN'T ON THE HORIZON.  ESPECIALLY SINCE THE STATE STATUTES WOULDN'T EVEN ALLOW A PRISON TO BE SIT AT THIS LOCATION ACCORDING TO THE FLORIDA CORRECTIONAL REFORM ACT OF 1983.

SWR TOWN MANAGER RESIGNS

BREAKING NEWS... DATELINE, MARCH 15, 2012, SOUTHWEST RANCHES, BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA.

KEN FIELDS, WHO WAS SOUTHWEST RANCHES TOWN MANAGER FOR THREE MONTHS, RESIGNED TODAY.  KEN POTENTIALLY FACED A VERY ANGRY, HOSTILE, AND PUNITIVE TOWN COUNCIL AT A SPECIALLY CONVENED MEETING TONIGHT TO DISCUSS HIS TERMINATION.  (THE TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED.) THIS CAME AFTER SOME OF THE MOST FIERY ANTICS SEEN IN SWR HISTORY AT LAST WEEK'S TOWN COUNCIL MEETING WHERE VICE MAYOR DOUG MCKAY WENT SO FAR AS TO POUND THE DAIS IN FRUSTRATION AT THE MANAGER'S APPARENT INSUBORDINATION.

Activist Loses Suit For Civil Rights and $1.25

As part of the long drawn out attempt to keep this prison deal hidden from public view, an anti-prison activist sued the Town of Southwest Ranches for access to public records related to the prison and lost the first round.  Now the Town claims the activist owes $20,000 in legal fees.Read this report from FOGWatch.org.

From a television news report it appears the Town of Southwest Ranches intends to seek legal fees from Bill Di Scipio after his public records lawsuit was dismissed by a Broward County judge.  According to the report the fees amount to more than $20,000.

ANOTHER VOTE TO DEFER, IS A VOTE FOR THE PRISON AGAIN

It's time for our elected officials to do what we elected them to do.  Some of them are fearful of legal entanglements and others like the money from CCA and SWR.  Some of them must actually want the prison.  The time for fear in the case of lawsuits, greed in the case of selling one's principles for blood money, or just plain stupidity in the case of those that actually want the prison, is long over.

The characters portrayed in this movie are fictional.... Any similarities are purely coincidental.

On November 16, 2011, Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank Ortis and the Commission shafted Iris Siple, opponents of the CCA prison, and of any attendees who wanted to send a message to both Pines and Southwest Ranches for plotting to build a prison behind our backs.  We wanted the commission to exercise the termination for convenience clause of the 2011 Fire/EMS ILA (draft copy at link) between Pembroke Pines and Southwest Ranches.
