The Town of Southwest Ranches, Corrections Corporation of American (CCA), and DHS / ICE want to build one of the largest immigration detention centers in the nation within walking distance of thousands of homes; thus, reducing the quality of our life and our community. We do not agree with the federal government privatizing our immigration detention centers throughout the nation when there is clear evidence that privatizing our prisons creates a clear public safety threat. For ICE to continue to privatize these institutions and bring this safety threat through their "secure communities Initiative" to our community is unacceptable. Depriving someone of their liberty is a non-delegable governmental function and privatizing of such a function is infecting our nation like a virus.

The Town of Southwest Ranches has now entered into it's THIRD Fire Contract within the last year now with the Town of Davie, costing taxpayers $120,000 in ramp up fees. They are now closing several roads in western Southwest Ranches charging the tax payers $80,000 for the gates. They have paid an unknown amount of money for lobbying with ICE regarding this prison. They have several lawsuits against the Town, 1- Involving Open Meeting Violations on a November 5th meeting concerning the ICE Detention Center, 2- Open Records Violations, and 3- The Town is putting together a lawsuit to sue Pembroke Pines for breach of contract because the City utilized their exit clause and cancelled for convenience their Fire/EMS contract which included water and sewer at the last minute for the CCA prison. In the contract it states that there should be no third party beneficiaries. CCA would be a third party in this instance.

CCA has also filed suit in Federal court against the City of Pembroke Pines saying they are denying them water however the City had never seen a water application. The City did file for a Declaratory Judgement in State Court but that has been put on hold until the Federal Court hears the suit from CCA.

Is ANYONE CONFUSED as to why the Pembroke Pines/Southwest Ranches Fire Agreement was cancelled? The Town Attorney Keith Poliakoff attempted to "slip" into the agreement a portion that guaranteed water for the prison at CCA's request. This is something that should have been brought up separately. CCA should have brought it forward on their own in a water application. This is sleight of hand that CCA and the Town attempted to do because they were so afraid of CCA being on the Pembroke Pines agenda.

As of June 2012, ICE put out a statement that the site selection was no longer needed due to the fact that the extra bedspace was no longer needed.

INCUMBENT VICE MAYOR, IRIS SIPLE, WHO CAME OUT AGAINST THE PRISON IN THE OPPOSITION'S INCIPIENT STAGE WAS VICTORIOUS IN DISTRICT #3.  THIS WAS APPARENTLY DONE WITHOUT MR. RON BERGERON'S SUPPORT.

JAY SCHWARTZ, A REFORMER, WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE GROUP AS A VASTLY MORE ENGAGED INDIVIDUAL WHO VEHEMENTLY OPPOSES THE PRISON.  THE GROUP FELT THAT DISTRICT 2 COMMISSIONER MCCLUSKEY WAS HOSTILE TO THE ANTI PRISON MOVEMENT AND CAMPAIGNED TIRELESSLY FOR JAY AS A RESULT.

WE DO RECOGNIZE THAT COMMISSIONER MCCLUSKEY IS A DEDICATED PUBLIC SERVANT AND THANK HIM FOR HIS YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE RESIDENTS OF PEMBROKE PINES AND WEST BROWARD.

THE RESIDENT GROUP'S POLITICAL CLOUT AND EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE MAY BE FOCUSED OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS ON THOSE FEDERAL ELECTED OFFICIALS SUCH AS DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ AND SENATOR BILL NELSON, AND SOUTHWEST RANCHES ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO EITHER ENDORSE THE PRISON, OR STEADFASTLY REFUSE TO LISTEN TO THE 90+% OF THE  PEOPLE AND ACTIVELY OPPOSE THE PRISON.

WE APPLAUD COMMISSIONER ANGELO CASTILLO'S PUSH FOR A RESOLUTION TO SEND A LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA ASKING HIM TO CANCEL PLANS FOR THIS PRISON.

WE HOPE THAT WITH COMMISSIONER SCHWARTZ, AND VICE MAYOR SIPLE, THE THREE OF THEM CAN: 1. ENSURE THAT THE WOMEN'S PRISON (BCI) IS PERMENENTLY SHUT ON MAY 1ST AND **NEVER** FALLS INTO CCA'S HANDS, 2. THAT THE REMAINING PLAT ZONED FOR A 4000 BED MEN'S FACILITY IS ANNEXED INTO PEMBROKE PINES AND ZONING FOR A PRISON ELIMIATED, AND 3. EVERY EFFORT IS MADE TO THWART SOUTHWEST RANCHES, ICE AND CCA FROM EVER BUILDING ANY PRISON ON THE REMAINING 20 ACRES IN SOUTHWEST RANCHES.

END TRANSMISSION...

  1. Elected officials do you hear us yet? Or are your heads still up your a$$es? If you don't hear us yet, you'll be hearing us soon. Nelson and council, DWS and Senator Nelson...this is directed at you. DWS, you're toast and so is Obama in this district. Florida is a swing state and leaning more to the right every day.

  2. Anonymous,

I appreciate your comment. However, the Commission seat is non partisan position. This was very much a referendum on the Prison as opposed to anybody's politics.

Bill Nelson, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Jeff Nelson, Breitkreuz, Fisikelli, Jablonski, and McKay all want the prison. They are on the wrong side of this. They decided to take the low road and sell out to a terrible corporation rather than take the high road and represent their CURRENT constituency. America is greater than believing a private prison is our only road to prosperity.

These politicians have firmly set themselves up as targets to be voted out of office irrespective of their political leanings.

  3. You PEOPLE seem to forget that Siple voted in favor of the prison over 3 times before Ziadie got into the race.
Next time check out ALL the facts before you support the wrong candidate again. Check the past videos on the Pines website and you will see the real truth about how Siple voted.

  4. We most certainly didn't forget that. She's certainly come around on the issue, though, hasn't she? And where was Ziadie during this whole fight? I don't remember seeing him nor do I remember BREC being any sort of help to us. C'est la vie.... We are beyond looking at who is right or who is wrong, but rather look at what is right and what is wrong.

By the way, that was a pretty bad showing for a republican candidate running against a democratic incumbent who voted three times for the prison. Maybe the Republicans should get their hands out of CCA's pants long enough to at least win when it's only their base going out to vote in a presidential primary.

You Republicans want support? Then I suggest you stop prostrating yourself to such hideous crony capitalists like CCA. We just proved that grassroots on the street will overcome any amount of money special interests spend. Don't you checked pants, double knit slack wearing country club RINOs get that? You just want the easy way out by taking tainted money.
