The Town of Southwest Ranches, Corrections Corporation of American (CCA), and DHS / ICE want to build one of the largest immigration detention centers in the nation within walking distance of thousands of homes; thus, reducing the quality of our life and our community. We do not agree with the federal government privatizing our immigration detention centers throughout the nation when there is clear evidence that privatizing our prisons creates a clear public safety threat. For ICE to continue to privatize these institutions and bring this safety threat through their "secure communities Initiative" to our community is unacceptable. Depriving someone of their liberty is a non-delegable governmental function and privatizing of such a function is infecting our nation like a virus.

The Town of Southwest Ranches has now entered into it's THIRD Fire Contract within the last year now with the Town of Davie, costing taxpayers $120,000 in ramp up fees. They are now closing several roads in western Southwest Ranches charging the tax payers $80,000 for the gates. They have paid an unknown amount of money for lobbying with ICE regarding this prison. They have several lawsuits against the Town, 1- Involving Open Meeting Violations on a November 5th meeting concerning the ICE Detention Center, 2- Open Records Violations, and 3- The Town is putting together a lawsuit to sue Pembroke Pines for breach of contract because the City utilized their exit clause and cancelled for convenience their Fire/EMS contract which included water and sewer at the last minute for the CCA prison. In the contract it states that there should be no third party beneficiaries. CCA would be a third party in this instance.

CCA has also filed suit in Federal court against the City of Pembroke Pines saying they are denying them water however the City had never seen a water application. The City did file for a Declaratory Judgement in State Court but that has been put on hold until the Federal Court hears the suit from CCA.

Is ANYONE CONFUSED as to why the Pembroke Pines/Southwest Ranches Fire Agreement was cancelled? The Town Attorney Keith Poliakoff attempted to "slip" into the agreement a portion that guaranteed water for the prison at CCA's request. This is something that should have been brought up separately. CCA should have brought it forward on their own in a water application. This is sleight of hand that CCA and the Town attempted to do because they were so afraid of CCA being on the Pembroke Pines agenda.

As of June 2012, ICE put out a statement that the site selection was no longer needed due to the fact that the extra bedspace was no longer needed.

It Depends on What the Meaning of Remote Is...

And now from somehwere in rural Southwest Ranches, former operating base of psychic Ms. Cleo, situated along the banks of Canal 11 on the edge of the Everglades, we ask you to take a step away from your locally filmed salacious Spanish novela and enjoy this episode of What's My Lie?

Filmed days before ratification of our new Movie and Filming ordinance, this episode of What's My Lie? addresses Mayor Jeff Nelson's and others' claim that the immigrant prison is being built in a remote area!  Getting this in under the wire may have saved the film maker thousands of dollars in permit fees AND saved Mayor Nelson the hassle of being disturbed at three in the morning... being disturbed making this video about a prison we feel will disturb US at 3 AM in the morning as well as around the entire clock.

So, sit back in your saddle, folks, grab some homemade gator jerky from this year's gator hunting season, take some time to clean your weapons from the latest outing at Markham Park's Gun Range, don't get too drunk off your Hoppe's Number 9....  and enjoy!

Please note that this video was provided to Residents Against Inappropriate Development, Inc. for use in our campaign against the immigrant prison in SWR.  The video contains commentary reflecting on Federal Immigration policy.  Our group does not take a position on immigration policy and is solely focused on stopping this prison from being built.  We are circulating this video because we believe it devastatingly debunks one of the main lies about the physical location of the prison.  We do not endorse nor reject the statements on policy made in this video.

  1. Over 15,000 school children attend school in this area, and will be subjected to danger caused by the ELECTED OFFICIALS OF SOUTHWEST RANCHES!!!!! If there is an escape then all those in close proximity will be in danger. Who will protect the children???? There are too many schools within this "REMOTE" area!!!!

  2. Who thought this location was a good idea?
I have lived many places around the Country and never seen anything like this.
Our prisons and work camps were always out in the middle of nothing.
Probably no people living closer than 5 miles from the facilities.
This video clearly shows all kinds of houses on the prison's front door step.
It also makes a good point about why we should not need these new facilities anyway.
Chrome down in Miami is reported to be only at 40-50 percent capacity as it is.
    This entire situation seems odd.

  3. ICE and CCA officials like this area and the commute to Miami, so says one of the reasons why this area was chosen. Thats right, degrade the livelihood and property values for thousands of people because a few want to live here.

    1. Their convenience is more important than our children and our community! Shame on ICE!

    2. That is right.
The priority is to make the prison convenient for the illegal inmates and the friends and family who are coming to visit them.

That takes priority over the quality of life and residential community of the legal citizens and taxpayers who are being made to fund this without a vote.

And the President is now telling us we need to expect to pay higher taxes.
      For what, things like this?

  4. Masterpiece!!!!! CCA might have the money to do robocall and distribute "flashy" mailers, but the RESIDENTS of PPines and SWR have
persistance, integrity, morals, dedication and LOVE for these communities and want ONLY the best for these neighborhoods, NO MONEY will buy that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting for a done deal, isn't it?

Can you EVER trust these people? How many more lies that they've told have we NOT caught on?

  5. Thank you to whomever made this. This shows how SWR is lying about the remoteness of the site. there are families with children in those homes and this video brings that point home. Not only is there a day care right there, but a mile south is an elementary school, a mile to the east is another elementary school and a mile to the west is west Broward HS.

ICE likes the area for their families? Guess what? We do too, that's why we live here and we don't want it ruined because done selfish ICE or CCA official likes the commute to Miami. I'm sure if their families lived here and their children went to school here, they'd rethink their policy on releasing convicts into the community.

The CCA / SWR contract from 2005 contains a bunch of whoppers too.

How can you trust them? Why gamble on their honesty and sincerity?

  6. Thank you for making this video! I have been saying this from the beginning! This is NOT a remote area! I am sick of people discounting resident sentiment by saying this is a remote area. I guess they will say ANYTHING to get this contract from ICE! -Ryann

  7. Excellent work! Showcased the lie they are attempting to shove down everyone's throat, about this being "a remote area". What is at stake is the safety and security of our families and will also destroy our property values.

  8. How many of the people who are for this actually live within a mile or 2 of this facility? My guess would be none. When Pembroke Pines wanted to put up new lights on Sheridan St.residents complained they could not go in their back yard and see the stars,so we made them put up shields, now its ok for me to go out back and see the glow of prison lights? This whole thing is a joke,it's obvious our mayor and councel members could care less about anyone living out west. The flyers sent out in the mail are a joke. How many Southwest residents are unemployed and would actually get or want permanent jobs there? All this money "we" would be getting is going to what.If our taxes go up a little or stay the same ,I could live with that much better than I could live with a prison in my back yard.Excuse me my remote back yard.

  9. Our council doesn't get it. This is all based on a lie. The "remote" locations. The "done deal.' The "upside" to the town. The "advisory council" meetings. All lies. Christmas resolutions doubling size of facility. Nefarious Town Attorneys who think they ARE running the Town rather than serving her people.

What's missing is sunshine. Openness. Inclusion. Well publicized meetings. Fairness. Dialog. Humility. Public service.

  10. Oh my God.
How did they ever think of putting a prison there.
This is insane. The homes and prison will be almost on top each other.

    1. Yes, and they don't care.

Many of the town leaders and town elders have written off the west part of their town.

Do they not even realize that one of the most beautiful municipal parts in the country, i.e. Chapel Trail Nature Preserve will sit practically in the driveway of this disgusting blight of a prison?

Is not prevention better than a cure?
Our government will not work hard to stop people entering America illegal.
But it will use much tax money to build a prison to hold and feed these people?
Like me those who are friends all came here legal.
    Others should do the same.

    1. Carmen,

With all due respect. This isn't even tax money. We are deficit spending with reckless abandon.

They don't have the money to build this. All the money CCA will receive comes from the Federal government. The federal government is racking up debt and saddling our children with it.

It pisses me off to think that the government will rob our children and shove an immigrant prison on them with the money they borrowed all so CCA and corrupt politicians like Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Bill Nelson can get tons of campaign contributions.

I want to vomit at the thought of it.

  12. so...lets see if i understand this, cca buys this land for a prison back when west broward wasnt developed. they sit on it, keep it secret and watch the schools and homes go up and never say anything to anyone, knowing they want to build there. now cca is mad because people dont want this in their backyards, for real? cca go away. if you wanted support for your prison, you should have been more open. sw ranches too. ranches get a clue, you should have built years ago and you kept it a secret too, now you want support? where was bergeron is all this? he watched too, knowing a prison was going to go up and he never said anything. alligator ron bergeron, keeper of the everglades, what a way to ruin a good reputation ronnie. now youre just the piece of s%^t that sold the land and wants your cut too. way to ruin your name and reputation.

  13. Amazing video! Pembroke Pines residents may be closest in proximity but I feel sorry for the innocent residents of SWR....they will be the ones who will ultimately pay the price for this monstrosity when the first lawsuit hits! And it will happen with the way CCA runs their prisons and with this prison being the largest in the country! 7000 residents paying for a multimillion dollar lawsuit! Taxes will skyrocket!

  14. Yes, this land was originally marked for industry and prison use back around 1971.
That was probably not a bad idea almost a half century ago when you consider ....

    (a) South Florida's population was 4 million less people than today.
    (b) University Drive was still a non-continous gravel road and virtually no development existed West of 100th ave.

In the years since, there has been a virtual "zone of silence" maintained around this area.

Meanwhile the population and urban sprawl in South Florida has grown and grown and grown.

You will hear some supporters of the Prison remark ....... "Residents who live out there got what they deserve because they should have done their homework and learned what was planned for that area before they moved to SWR".

Well, let me relate my own experience ...

I moved to SWR 13 years ago.
Seeing the landfill and women's center, I asked BOTH the realtor and Broward County itself what future growth plans were in place for the area.

I was told ... "None, except that maybe the landfill may need to resume full operation one day if the population continues to grow".

Over the past 13 years, I NEVER heard a single thing about a Prison planned for this area until approx one year ago !

When all this broke loose, I walked around and asked all my neighbors when they first learned about plans for a prison in this area.
Some of these people have lived here since 1978 and 1983.
    The answer ?
NONE OF THEM had heard about any such plans until last year for the first time !

The town claims this was all well publicized.
If a handful of people were ignorant of this, you can blame them for being in the dark.
But how do you explain over 90% of the residents being totally taken by surprise ?

Even if you try to claim all 90% of these residents were blind idiots , then how do you explain away the fact that the towns themselves did not stop granting construction permits and growing their cities and neighborhoods right up to the edge of the proposed site ???

Certainly THEY must have known ...... right ?

Despite having a Monthly Newsletter in SWR that does a good job announcing yard sales, BSO contracts, SFWMD conflicts, parades, etc....
it somehow managed to go for YEARS without mentioning the prison at all.

And of course, we have all seen the revealed emails between CCA and SWR town officials and lawyers telling everybody involved behind the scenes to "Keep this quiet!"

    The reality is simply this...........
40 years and 4 million people ago, this area was targeted for use as a potential industrial or prison site where it would have in fact been far removed from the public.

But nothing happened at that time and it was kind of tucked away into a dark closet for 40 years.

Now in the shadows, some opportunists re-discovered this lost gem and realized it was now a bad idea, but $$$$$$$$ was involved .................... so devious trickery, and questionable conduct has been used to try and force it thru now when it is obviously totally inappropriate for the modern era and region.

Additionally, the existing women's facility is slated to be closed down.

This COULD actually be a blessing if there was real leadership in SWR as this would allow them to move away from a negative, abysmal economic dependency on the negative side of human society and instead use this golden opportunity to rebuild the image of the area with a new economic identity by luring in positive, non-controversial businesses.

Instead of being forever known as another "Prison Town", this region could now be rebuilt with a positive business image that is alluring and not negative.

    1. I moved here 15 yrs ago and I too did my "homework"! I asked about the women's prison and landfill. I researched and found out the landfill was to be closed in 2007 and be made into a park. The prison was small and had cottage type housing and the existing land would be single family homes. I guess i was LIED to! Big surprise! Seems to be the way business is done in SWR!

  15. Bottom Line ...
The only people in support of this Prison are those who have something to personally gain from it.
That gain may be political. It may be financial. It may be promise of a future job or appointment.
There is no noble motivation at work here.

    ReplyDelete
  16. What do you expect if the "on-going rate" of Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Shultz is $1,000 and she endorsed this prison.....$1,000!!!!!!! Isn't that sickening?????? We have been sold by her, Senator Bill Nelson, Mayor Jeff Nelson and the other SWR officials.....they all have to be kicked out of office!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. This makes no sense.
I have friends who work at Krome.
They claim capacity has only been averaging 50 to 60 percent for the last few years.
Not even considering the location shown here, why is this being built at all?
    It is not needed.

Weve lived in SWR for over 20 years and have never heard anything about this until recently. Thank you for the NO PRISON sign and all the information. CCA sounds like a nasty company who doesnt give a flip about our town and neither do our town officials.

  19. Cindy,
Welcome on board. We keep hearing from old timers who've lived here for a long time that none of you know anything about the prison.

Guys like Doug McKay are insistent that we should have done our homework before buying a house in Southwest Ranches. They all want to keep their taxes low by having the newcomers pay 3 and 4 times the amount in property taxes and they aren't even courteous. Instead, you get, "Do your homework."

Further, guys like Freddy Fisikelli tell us that they went ahead with this because nobody said anything about it before and now when it's a reality, we are all upset. I don't think they did half the job advertising their intent as they should have.

Mayor Nelson tells us repeatedly that he believes 75% of the residents SUPPORT the prison. It's simply astonishing either how blind he is or how much of a liar he is.

They ignore the very attorney they hired and love, Keith Poliakoff, who wrote a letter telling everybody they were under a "cone of silence" and should not talk to anybody. They should keep it quiet so their legislative leaders like Bill Nelson and Debbie Wasserman Schultz could endorse the prison without suffering exposure and backlash. Keith said about us, "the sharks are circling."

You all need to call, write and put up as many signs as you can just to show this DEAF DEAF DEAF Town Council that we don't want nor do we need their stinking prison.
