The Town of Southwest Ranches, Corrections Corporation of American (CCA), and DHS / ICE want to build one of the largest immigration detention centers in the nation within walking distance of thousands of homes; thus, reducing the quality of our life and our community. We do not agree with the federal government privatizing our immigration detention centers throughout the nation when there is clear evidence that privatizing our prisons creates a clear public safety threat. For ICE to continue to privatize these institutions and bring this safety threat through their "secure communities Initiative" to our community is unacceptable. Depriving someone of their liberty is a non-delegable governmental function and privatizing of such a function is infecting our nation like a virus.

The Town of Southwest Ranches has now entered into it's THIRD Fire Contract within the last year now with the Town of Davie, costing taxpayers $120,000 in ramp up fees. They are now closing several roads in western Southwest Ranches charging the tax payers $80,000 for the gates. They have paid an unknown amount of money for lobbying with ICE regarding this prison. They have several lawsuits against the Town, 1- Involving Open Meeting Violations on a November 5th meeting concerning the ICE Detention Center, 2- Open Records Violations, and 3- The Town is putting together a lawsuit to sue Pembroke Pines for breach of contract because the City utilized their exit clause and cancelled for convenience their Fire/EMS contract which included water and sewer at the last minute for the CCA prison. In the contract it states that there should be no third party beneficiaries. CCA would be a third party in this instance.

CCA has also filed suit in Federal court against the City of Pembroke Pines saying they are denying them water however the City had never seen a water application. The City did file for a Declaratory Judgement in State Court but that has been put on hold until the Federal Court hears the suit from CCA.

Is ANYONE CONFUSED as to why the Pembroke Pines/Southwest Ranches Fire Agreement was cancelled? The Town Attorney Keith Poliakoff attempted to "slip" into the agreement a portion that guaranteed water for the prison at CCA's request. This is something that should have been brought up separately. CCA should have brought it forward on their own in a water application. This is sleight of hand that CCA and the Town attempted to do because they were so afraid of CCA being on the Pembroke Pines agenda.

As of June 2012, ICE put out a statement that the site selection was no longer needed due to the fact that the extra bedspace was no longer needed.

Davie Fire/EMS Contract with SWR

The Town of Davie has just posted a contract with their agenda item to discuss providing the town of Southwest Ranches with Fire/EMS services, coverage that would extend to the plans the Town has for a future 2500 bed 500,000 sq. ft. detention center.

See the excerpt taken from contract below.

Remember back in November when they said they were going to cap it at 1500 beds?  We didn't believe them, and now we see that we were right to not trust the Town and CCA capping the beds at 1500.  All the Town and CCA care about is showing them the money because their Town is drowning in liabilities for parks brought in from the Canada days...

Now they have almost doubled this facility from 1500 beds to 2500 which would be 4.5 times the size of Krome brought into West Broward County.  Krome is a 500 bed facility.  To put this in terms that you might understand better we are going to do some Wal-Mart math.

The average Walmart store is approximately 97,000 square feet, while Walmart's larger stores, referred to as Super Centers, carries a square footage of approximately 186,000.  - Ask.com

So we are bringing a facility approx 5 times the size of a regular sized Wal-Mart.   Or, if that doesn't make sense, try 2.5 times the size of a Super Wal-Mart!   Filled with 2500 Detainees, that ICE will be letting out of this facility through the Alternatives to Detention plan ICE uses, laid out in a previous post called, We agree! It's Not a Prison!

How do you like THEM apples?

If not, email the Davie Council and make your voice heard by asking them not to allow this to happen.  Email your Officials.  Better Yet, ATTEND the Davie Town Council meeting located at 6591 Orange Drive on Wednesday, May 2nd at 6:30 pm.  Pembroke Pines said they didn't have a vote on the Detention Center yet they were called on it for providing Fire/EMS and Water/Sewer for it in the Fire/EMS Agreement.  Politifact did a nice article on that.

Do they not realize how secure communities and this detention center will ruin our community?

  1. The audacity of the Town of SWR and CCA never ceases to astound me! How do these people live with themselves? They are all pathological liars! Now 2,500 beds instead of the 1,500. No one believed them when they backed down from the bed increase in November. We always knew that CCA would do whatever they wanted, they always do...no accountability to anyone, they're a private company! How can anyone even consider doing business with CCA? Wake up people this is a BAD DEAL for ALL of Broward! Weston, Davie, Cooper City, etc...you will all feel the negative effects this prison can make if it goes through! READ, GET INFORMED AND GET INVOLVED! Our community's future depends on it!!

  2. Hope Davie is reading the whole contract with a fine tooth comb. When Pines was going to give SWR Fire/EMS they backdoored extras to the contract. Now SWR is begging for the water and sewer they tried to get from Pines. Nelson is quoted as saying he can make the lawsuit go away if Pines gives the prison water/sewer. He'll throw his town under the bus for CCA. He's also probably telling Pines he'll keep the roads between Pines and SWR open if they give water and sewer! Close the roads! NO PRISON!

  3. Davie has been around long enough to know Jeff Nelson and SWR shenanigans, so one would hope theyre smart enough to read the fine print. By now, its quite clear that Nelson is only in this for himself, he cares for no ones interests but himself.

Part of Davie goes right down the middle of SWR and is located only a few miles from the detention center. Im sure the residents wont be happy that there will be illegal detainees running through our communities on ankle monitoring bracelets and thousands of strangers will also be coming and going through our towns.

Davie, be smarter than Jeff Nelson. Actually, thats not hard to do, my 6 year old niece is smarter than Nelson.

  5. Does Mayor Paul realize that this proposed prison is only about a mile from Silver Trail Middle School where her Davie residents attend? Does Mayor Paul realize that released immigrants will have to walk past that middle school to get to the nearest public transportation? It is also less than a mile from West Broward High where Davie residents also attend. Is Mayor Paul aware of ICE's Alternative to Detention where thousands of immigrants will be released into all of our communities? This prison does not belong in Broward. Private prisons do not belong in our society! It's disgraceful!

Mayor Paul, you have always done the right thing by Davie! Please don't turn your back on your residents in the west! Say no to Fire/EMS for Southwest Ranches!!

Not to split hairs, but it will be illegal aliens released, not immigrants, there's a difference, and yes, the worst part is many of them will have criminal records.

Private prisons have no place in our society, much less in the midst of thousands of homes with children. The mere presence of CCA increases public safety risk. CCA had no regard for Pines, SWR, or anyone else, they are here to make money at the expense of human lives. Homeland security has no business putting thousands of people at risk using remote monitoring aka ankle bracelets among communities. ICE is the worst domestic terrorist in this case.

Our federal tax $$ are paying for this crap, right in our own backyards. Thanks Obama and failed immigration policy. Thanks wasserman Schultz for acting like a republican and being a private prison tool. Thank you homeland security for bringing the danger to our own backyards

  8. My child goes to silver trail ms....I live in western Davie. I'd rather not see Davie support this and put our families and children in danger. I've read the govt reports, they release illegals on ankle bracelets including pedophiles and violent criminals

  9. As a resident of Pines I would hope, and believe, that my mayor and commissioners would take into consideration how a neighboring municipality feels about an issue. Davie knows that Pines does not want this facility! Can Davie, in good conscience, provide services to this atrocity?

I think all towns/cities in Broward should band together and stand up against private for profit prisons!! As a federal judge from Mississippi has stated about the conditions seen in a private prison, "a picture of such horror as should be unrealized anywhere in the civilized world."

Do we want this in our county? Do we want this near our children, homes, schools, and places of worship? I think not!!

  10. Sen. Nelson will be receiving a phone call, a letter, and an email from me shortly asking him to change his stance on this matter. I don't live in the area, but I am diametrically opposed to for-profit prisons and my vote counts. I have supported Sen. Nelson in the past but I will NOT vote for him if he continues to endorse this project.

  11. These Prison for Profits ruin a community in more ways than one. The prisoners become the workers-slave labor as it's called, the train them to build things like washing machines, and teach them to grow crops, fruits, vegetables and an array of different services that can be sold at a lower price than what can be found in your neigborhood. My minor child is living in a prison for a murder he did not comitt and is not culpable for, Bryce's disability status is Other Health Impaired, I wonder how many people own stock in this prison for profit industry that is an epidemic in our country? How much do they stand to profit from my minor sons life and your loved ones life too. http:www.4brycesbattle.org

Please help shut this morally insane business down.... a mother
